2016 National Fossil Day

This October 7th-9th, Stonerose is hosting its 6th Annual National Fossil Day (NFD) event.  The program will include painting the popular geologic timeline on part of Kean Street, scientific presentations and discussions, and lots of digging for fossils.   Plan to take part in celebrating NFD at Stonerose!

Our goal is to promote and enhance science education in order to broaden public knowledge and allow casual networking with the scientific community. All listed events are open to the public!

Friday is Kid’s Day! Kid’s only digging at Boot Hill.  MEMBERS can volunteer to help out with students on the hill, or with the timeline painting.  There will also be an opportunity to volunteer cleaning up the Member Area of Boot Hill, under the direction of “3G”, our Stonerose veteran and quarrying guru.  Later that day join us for a a presentation by visiting ASU interns at the Republic Senior Center, followed by a no-host dinner/social evening at one of Republic’s venues.

  • 8:30 -3:00   MEMBERS AREA CLEANUP
  • 10:30-2:00  School Timeline Painting, Digging, Fossil ID classes
  • 5:30-6:30    Presentation by visiting ASU PhD Grad Students, Soon Flynn and Shannon Doan

Saturday is Fossil Digging Day! Spend the day digging for fossils on your own or being part of a guided collecting tour. Members dig at Boot Hill for free and will be allowed to keep 6 fossils on Saturday and Sunday; a discounted admission of $5 per adult are being offered to non-members, both days. 

5:00-7:00  No host social hour and dinner at Freckles’ Gourmet BBQ

5:00-6:45  Silent Auction to benefit Stonerose

7:00-8:00 Dr. Bruce Archibald, Paleoentomologist – Simon Fraser University-  Freckles’ Meeting Room

Sunday wrap up at the Stonerose Interpretive Center.  Digging from 8am until 3 pm. Guided Collecting tours available.

  • 8:00-10:00  Continental Breakfast hosted by Stonerose, photo sharing and networking.
